Dedéia MEIRELLES
WHEN TAPESTRY BECOMES ARCHITECTURE
When does tapestry cease to be something we look at and become something we inhabit?
For centuries, tapestry has occupied the wall as image, ornament, and narrative. In Tapestries in Choreography, Brazilian artist Dedéia Meirelles and BS Galleria Brussels propose another possibility: tapestry as architecture, as experience, and as a catalyst for human relationships.
Presented during RendezVous – Brussels Art Week 2026, the exhibition marks Meirelles’ first European solo exhibition and introduces a new body of work developed in close dialogue with BS Galleria.
Rather than presenting a new series of textile works, the exhibition proposes a shift in the way tapestry itself is understood. Created exclusively for the exhibition, the four works expand the possibilities of textile practice through architecture. They no longer inhabit the wall alone. Instead, they become spatial propositions that reorganize the relationship between object, body, and environment.
Throughout her practice, Meirelles has transformed embroidery, garments, reclaimed textiles, and found materials into sculptural works that explore memory, human relationships, and the symbolic potential of making. In Tapestries in Choreography, that investigation enters a new phase. Invited by BS Galleria to expand her practice into architectural space, she creates works whose function extends beyond utility to become lived experience.
A room divider becomes a place of encounter.
A garment becomes collective memory.
A body becomes possibility.
A hammock becomes suspended contemplation.
These transformations are neither symbolic gestures nor exercises in functional design. They reveal a broader curatorial proposition: the function of an object no longer lies solely in what it does, but in what it makes possible. Rather than prescribing how the works should be experienced, they create the conditions for experience itself.
The works do not simply inhabit architecture. They invite architecture to become part of the work.

BS Galleria is a functional art gallery with locations in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Brussels, Belgium, dedicated to mid-century collectible design and contemporary design, with a particular focus on works by Brazilian artists and designers.
Its curatorial program brings together practitioners whose work operates at the intersection of art, design, and craftsmanship. Spanning generations and disciplines, the gallery’s selection reflects a commitment to material experimentation, cultural narratives, and the enduring dialogue between function and artistic expression. Each work is chosen not only for its aesthetic and technical qualities, but also for its capacity to introduce meaning, identity, and cultural depth into residential, hospitality, and commercial environments.
Alongside its curated collection, BS Galleria collaborates selectively with architects, interior designers, developers, and private collectors on commissioned projects. When a space calls for a site-specific intervention or a unique artistic response, the gallery facilitates a dialogue between artist, client, and architecture, resulting in works conceived in direct relation to their context.
Every commission remains grounded in the artist’s own practice and visual language. Rather than customization, the processseeks to create singular works that preserve artistic integrity while responding thoughtfully to the character and narrative of a space.
Through its activities in Brazil and Europe, BS Galleria promotes contemporary creative production within an international context, fostering meaningful exchanges between artists, collectors, institutions, and the built environment.
