For an 1830s farmer or sugar refiner, a battlefield could have been what a coal seam is to a miner, a mushroom patch to a forager, or a wild apple tree to a walker. Men from across Europe came here to die by the tens of thousands. Reduced to bone char, they entered a growing food industry. The first European Union was perhaps an apple pie.
