This exhibition presents works by Danae Io, Dóra Maurer, Marie-Françoise Plissart and Margaret Raspé, who frame and sequence daily life through self-constructed image-making devices. Formally and procedurally rigorous, their works also embrace contingency and the interference of everyday realities into the frame. Having a structure in the first place allows for instances of slippage, where the frame does not hold.
Within today’s culture, which privileges speed and immediacy, the strong pull of these works stems from their concern with mediation, as seen in the artists’ experiments with photographic and moving-image technologies, often using their bodies as machine-like extensions. While they draw on the artists’ immediate environments, the works are not autobiographical; rather, they question the narrative unity of biography.

SB34 is a non-profit organization based in Brussels, committed to supporting contemporary artistic practices through the provision of affordable, high-quality production spaces and resources. Established in 2018, the organization aims to maintain and foster environments where artistic work can develop and artists can sustain their practice over the long term. SB34 operates as a multidisciplinary platform, offering studios and technical equipment, while also facilitating professional support and peer exchange. In addition, the organization manages two exhibition spaces dedicated to promoting experimental and research-based practices. These spaces serve as sites for visibility, collaboration, and dialogue among local and international artists and cultural workers, reinforcing SB34’s role as a structure for artistic production, presentation, dissemination and mediation.
